  Jessica Bucknam shouts “tiao!” (tee-ow) and her fourth-grade students jump.

  “Dun!” (doo-wen) she commands, and they crouch (蹲). They giggle (吃吃地笑) as the commands keep coming in Mandarin Chinese.
